Why many Indian farmers commit suicide

It seems Indian farmers are deeply in need of its government’s attention as millions are trying to end their lives due to poverty and inability to pay their loans.

Many reported cases of debt-ridden farmers drinking low-cost variety of hair dye to simply end their misery are an example of these people who struggle the trying times in India’s remote areas. But authorities have already ordered not to sell cheap hair dyes to the farmers.

With 11 incidents of Indian farmers who had died in Uttar Pradesh for the past three months, these are an indication that many farmers would rather commit suicide than live a life of hopelessness and struggle.

India belonging to the category of developing nations may in some way has left behind the welfare of the agricultural sector. The poor situation of farmers living in the western and southern India may not have been given priority by the government causing many to commit suicide, instead of waiting to die. Two-thirds of the Indian population of 1.1 billion belongs to the agricultural sector.

Ganesh Kumar, principal of the Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College, said drinking hair dye is sure means to cause kidney failure. But the selling, he added, of hair dyes have bee strictly also prohibited.

As part of the climate change that we are currently experiencing, the farmlands of India are a no exception. For the past four years, the Bundelkhand region has encountered drought due to lack of monsoon rains. Many young and old males have changed jobs and migrated to the nearby cities. Those who are left to take good care of the unproductive lands are the women and the elderly.

As these things happen in India, I am wondering how desperate these farmers are to think of killing themselves instead of pursuing to continue life no matter what. Probably, dying has been the only way to end their hardships in life.

If only many will support movements for the general good like prioritizing budgets and funding, then these farmers could have been spared from ending their lives. Every life is as important as any other. So, it should not be wasted.
