Picture Archiving and Communication System, or PACS is an electronic network which is used to connect various imaging modalities like MRI, Ultra Sound, CT scan to computers. Physicans sitting thousands of miles away can see the images a t one time and consult each other. PACS imaging has redcued time and distance barriers and has been a boon to medical field. Orthopedic PACS offer filmless environment to orthpedic suregeons. PACS imaging has reduced the need for taking out X rays and storing and filing them. There will be much lesser X ray film waste to be disposed. Radiology department generated big amount of waste in the form of X ray films. X ray film and radiology waste is contaminated with silver, which is highly toxic and is callsified as special waste. X ray films have to pass through silver recovery unit and can not be disposed off directly. X ray film recycling is done by many X ray film handlers which extract silver from the x ray film.
