Stressed? It's All in the Mind

With so much development worldwide, man has been so overwhelmed with every day activities. The hundreds of things to do when overdone may cause stress. Stress happens when people tend to be in distress with their mind and body and thinking about the heaps of "to do list" and bundles of "what must be done" today, tomorrow, next week or the days to come.

Stress comes from the Latin word Sirictus, which means being constricted or delimited. An expert on stress management, Dr. Hars Seyle, defined stress as the wear-and-tear of our bodies due to life activities. It is the overall result of the body's reactions to situations that make us worried, irritated, excited or even fearful. Life experiences in everything we do may cause stress. Stress in itself is not bad. However, there is a certain level of stress beyond our control that makes our lives miserable. The stress-causing events may be termed as stressors. Our body to a certain extent can deal with stress and function well. But whenever there are a number of stresses such as deadlines, household chores, bills to pay, death of a loved-one, or even office work overload, then these may harm our well-being if we are not able to resolve them.

Certainly, we must live in a balanced lifestyle. On one hand, too little stress makes life boring. On the other hand, too much problems or stresses may cause us to suffer from tension or anxiety. In turn, these may lead to the inability to take care of one's health and may cause ailments such as headache, migraine, insomnia, hypertension, heart attack, nervous breakdown, sleep disorders, loss of appetite, back pain, ulcer, etc. When we are stressed, we are rushing things out to do everything in one sitting even if it will need sometime to finish a task. Stress experts say mental rush is one of the causes of tension. We should be reminded that all things can be done if we employ better time management strategies in accomplishing our work. A timetable perhaps can be useful if we are able to priorities things. First things first technique can be used. But if you can do multi-tasking, it all depends on how you execute your activities efficiently. Avoid panicking and having the attitude of just starting things and delaying them later on. Be eager to finish them or your load will just be added to yesterday's delays.

One positive way of doing things is to relax one's mind to relieve stress. It is better to work in a tight schedule with a relaxed mind rather than working and worrying at the same time. You can do more when you are relaxed. Take some break in between tense situations. This will loosen up your heart-breaking sessions. Make priorities by enlisting what should be done first. You can not make all things at the same time. Do the most important first and the rest will follow. Seek assistance if possible. You are not a superhero and don't try to be one. Stress is reduced if you know that you are not alone in solving a task or generating a solution to a problem. A new perspective or a better advice can be solicited in taking appropriate actions to a dilemma or problem.

Simple guidelines in reducing stress may be in the form of exercising, yoga or daily meditation, drinking at least 10 glasses of water a day, indulging oneself in recreational activities like watching movies, going to the mall or just visiting a friend. These are some ways of relieving your stresses. Taking stress-reducing medicines can help, but this is only temporary. Stress is only in the mind. The things to do can be efficiently accomplished if we free our mind of thinking about them so much. Relax and all things will be done in time.
